ZEISS JAPAN Project, Interview and Tutorial (2019)

ZEISS Japan wanted us to help them promote their products with ZEISS eXtended Data. Weworked on a project by using Zeiss CP.3 XD lenses and the eXtended Data. I worked on thisproject as a VFX Supervisor and Lead Artist. I was the on-set Supervisor to consult with thedirector and producers during production. Also, I worked as a VFX Supervisor duringpre-production and post-production. I managed the CG/VFX team and communicated withthe director and producers to achieve our visions. In addition, ZEISS Japan did not knowhow to use their camera data in the VFX process and softwares such as Nuke and AfterEffects, so I did research and development on how to bring eXtended Data to VFX andutilize them in Nuke and After Effects for undistortion and vignette correction. When you tryto matchmove footage with wide-angle lenses that have strong lens distortion, it causes thetracking process to be difficult especially if the camera moves around a lot. Also, matchmoving and compositing on something with straight lines require precise undistortingand tracking.During the pre-production meetings, in order to show off the power and usefulness ofeXtended Data, I suggested that we should matchmove straight buildings and create CGbuildings as an extension on top of the footage of the live-action buildings. I alsorecommended that they use wide-angle lenses with low focal length so that the distortion willbe more noticeable and require undistorting the footage before tracking.ZEISS developed a tool called Injection Tool which transfers the eXtended Data into theEXR sequence. Before they made this tool, you would have had to use Silverstack to extractthe eXtended Data from the footage first. Although Injection Tool was a very usefulimprovement, they still didn’t have detailed tutorials or materials explaining how to use thistool step by step. I had to go back and forth with the ZEISS developing team in order tosolve errors and ensure the correct way to use the Injection Tool and ZEISS plugins such asZEISS Lens Distortion Correction Node and ZEISS Lens Shading Correction Node.In addition, a famous Japanese filmmaking website called “Pronews” interviewed me for amagazine article, and “Marimo Records” interviewed me for a video interview. They askedme why this technology is important and useful in visual effects and will improve theefficiency and quality of the post-production. I explained in detail how complicated trackingcan be caused by lens distortion and undistorting the footage before tracking is important butsometimes difficult to manage for a large number of shots. I elaborated that eXtended Dataand ZEISS plugins will efficiently save a lot of work hours and achieve the perfectundistortion and tracking without any human error. Therefore, we can spend more time onmore creative and high-quality CG work. Finally, it will improve not only VFX quality but alsothe overall project itself.I also made a tutorial for how to use eXtended Data in Nuke explaining how to use InjectionTool and ZEISS plugins step by step which has never been done before.
